Managing the Rewilded Garden Workshop

What is it

This workshop explores the practical aspects of managing a rewilded garden. Learn how the gardener, acting as the keystone species, shapes the ecosystem through plant selection, seasonal management and more.

Who is it for

Managing the Rewilded Garden is the ideal choice for gardeners of all levels interested in practical rewilding techniques, exploring alternative gardening methods and creating biodiverse spaces. A perfect follow-on to the ‘Planting the Rewilded Garden workshops‘ earlier in the season.

In our walled garden experiment, we’ve been challenging conventional gardening methods to create diverse opportunities for wildlife. But what does this mean in practice? What happens with weeding and cutting back, for example? Join one of the Gardens Team for a presentation on how we manage the Rewilded Walled Garden and review the early results of our radical approach. After tea and coffee, you’ll head out into the garden to explore the practicalities first-hand, with plenty of time for questions and brainstorming.

Learn about the principles of rewilding, and what we mean by this in a garden context; the role of the gardener as a keystone species; how we choose what stays and goes in the garden ecosystem; seasonal management; the importance of connectivity and disturbance; and sustainability, both in terms of resources and time.

PLEASE NOTE: The garden visits take place next to Knepp Castle in the Middle Block of the rewilding project – a different place to all other safaris. Please do not go to the campsite/safari car park, but follow the directions to the Walled Garden on your pre-visit email.

Our 12+ Policy

Knepp Wildland Safaris and campsite are all about the quiet and patient observation of nature.

Some of the species we are likely to encounter are shy or can be frightened by loud noises or sudden movements. Our campsite with open-air fire-pits, wood-burning stoves and an on-site pond is unsuitable for small children.

For this reason, our safaris, holiday cottages and campsite are suitable only for children of 12 and over.
