Information

For those that aren’t able to walk very far but would still like an opportunity to explore the rewilding project on foot, join us on an easy-going perambulation in the company of one of our expert ecologists.

As you gently weave through rewilded scrub, your guide will help you identify birdsong and share insights into the ecology of your surroundings. You’ll connect with nature in a way that is scarcely possible in other regions of the UK.

Depending on the time of year, you might see rare purple emperor butterflies, hear nightingales or turtle doves. Above you, white storks – the first to breed in the UK for 600 years – circle the skies or swoop onto their nests.

In spring, our free-roaming longhorn cattle, Exmoor ponies, Tamworth pigs and red and fallow deer have young at foot. By autumn, when the deer rut begins, the landscape echoes with titanic bellowing and the clashing of antlers.

Mid-way through the safari you’ll break for a refreshment and a sit-down before making your way slowly back to base.

This safari runs from 30 April to 15 September.

The Snail-paced Safari is a two-hour walk at a very leisurely pace with frequent stops. You’ll be walking on uneven ground so do wear hiking boots/shoes with good support and, if you’re unsteady on your feet, one or two sticks are advisable. Please note, we will be covering about 1.5km/1 mile in distance.

Knepp Wildland Safaris and campsite are all about the quiet and patient observation of nature.

Some of the species we are likely to encounter are shy or can be frightened by loud noises or sudden movements. Our campsite with open-air fire-pits, wood-burning stoves and an on-site pond is unsuitable for small children.

For this reason, our safaris, holiday cottages and campsite are suitable only for children of 12 and over.
