Purple emperors are one of the most astonishing successes of the rewilding project. None having been recorded here in the recent past, Knepp is now home to the UK’s largest colony of this spectacular butterfly. Unlike other butterflies, the purple emperor has decadent tastes. Shunning flowers, it feeds on fox scat and sap runs from wounds on the oak trees, behaving more like a tropical butterfly.
You’ll see purple emperor sap runs and watch as the butterflies descend to take minerals from paths and animal droppings. Watch as the males perform elegant displays and show surprising aggression, chasing away anything else that flies – including birds.
Mid-way through the safari you’ll break for a refreshing drink and locally made brownies.
These safaris run between 28 June and 13 July.
Our Purple Emperor Safari is a three-hour walk with frequent stops. You’ll need a good level of fitness and be able to cope with walking on uneven ground.

Knepp Wildland Safaris, our gardens and campsite are all about the quiet and patient observation of nature.
Some of the species we are likely to encounter are shy or can be frightened by loud noises or sudden movements. Our campsite with open-air fire-pits, wood-burning stoves and an on-site pond is unsuitable for small children.
For this reason, our safaris, garden visits, holiday cottages and campsite are suitable only for children of 12 and over.
