Information

This half-day event offers a deeper dive into the key principles of rewilding and a chance to explore the dynamics of naturally regenerating wood pasture and ecosystem functions. You’ll see and hear what we’re learning at Knepp about how plant growth and natural disturbance work in a near-natural setting, and how this can be applied to landscape-scale conservation thinking.

After a presentation by Tony Whitbread, ecologist and president of the Sussex Wildlife Trust, you will head out on foot with Tony and Matt Phelps, Knepp’s lead ecologist, to see the results of the rewilding process in our 1,100-acre Southern Block, the wildest and woolliest area of Knepp Wildland. You’ll encounter our free-roaming large herbivores (longhorn cows, Tamworth pigs, Exmoor ponies, red and fallow deer), learning how we manage them with as light a touch as possible and how they shape habitats and biodiversity in the landscape.

Mid-way through the safari we’ll break for a refreshing drink and locally made brownies.

Our Ecology of Rewilding Safari is at a gentle walking pace with frequent stops. You’ll need a moderate level of fitness and be able to cope with walking on uneven ground.

2-5.30pm starting at the Cow Barn
£85 per person

Our 12+ Policy

Knepp Wildland Safaris, our gardens and campsite are all about the quiet and patient observation of nature.

Some of the species we are likely to encounter are shy or can be frightened by loud noises or sudden movements. Our campsite with open-air fire-pits, wood-burning stoves and an on-site pond is unsuitable for small children.

For this reason, our safaris, garden visits, holiday cottages and campsite are suitable only for children of 12 and over.
