Butterflies are rising in number and variety at Knepp. The first survey in 2005 recorded 13 different species and by 2020 this had increased to 38! The most recent addition to the list is the large tortoiseshell, a species that is making a comeback in the UK and was first recorded at Knepp in 2022. Some of the butterflies recorded at Knepp are new arrivals since the rewilding started, like the marbled white, the small heath, and the dark green fritillary. Some – like green-veined whites, Essex skippers and, of course, purple emperors – have exploded in numbers.
Join our specialist guides in search of white admiral, silver-washed fritillary, marbled white, purple hairstreaks, green-veined white, comma, gatekeeper, small skipper and many other butterflies.
Mid-way through the safari you’ll break for a refreshing drink and locally made brownies.
Butterfly Safaris run from 18 June to 27 July.
Our Butterfly Safari is a three -hour walk with frequent stops. You’ll need a good level of fitness and be able to cope with walking on uneven ground.

Knepp Wildland Safaris and campsite are all about the quiet and patient observation of nature.
Some of the species we are likely to encounter are shy or can be frightened by loud noises or sudden movements. Our campsite with open-air fire-pits, wood-burning stoves and an on-site pond is unsuitable for small children.
For this reason, our safaris, holiday cottages and campsite are suitable only for children of 12 and over.
