The red stags rut from late-September to mid-October, roaring and clashing antlers. Their territorial displays, pawing up the ground and turfing up the sward with their antlers, adds another disturbance factor to the land, creating opportunities for other species as well as an autumn spectacle for visitors to the Wildland.
Join one of our expert ecologists to head out into the rewilding project to search for red stags and their harems, fallow bucks and does, Tamworth pigs gorging on acorns and seasonal wildlife such as winter thrushes arriving to spend the colder months at Knepp.
You’ll be taken to our deer hide, at the edge of a fallow ‘lek’ or display ground, where we’ll serve you our Wild Range venison charcuterie and a tot of Knepp’s homemade sloe gin.
Autumn Safaris run from 04 October to 02 November 2025.
Our Autumn Safari is a three-hour walk with frequent stops. You’ll need a good level of fitness and be able to cope with walking on uneven ground in dark, sometimes wet conditions. In wet weather, or following wet days, wellies are a must as our paths can be submerged by water in places. You’ll also need to ascend steps into the deer hide.
Start times vary between 2.15pm and 4.00pm

Knepp Wildland Safaris, our gardens and campsite are all about the quiet and patient observation of nature.
Some of the species we are likely to encounter are shy or can be frightened by loud noises or sudden movements. Our campsite with open-air fire-pits, wood-burning stoves and an on-site pond is unsuitable for small children.
For this reason, our safaris, garden visits, holiday cottages and campsite are suitable only for children of 12 and over.
