Steve started his career in conservation quite young. A founder member of the Surrey Junior Zoological Society aged 9, he went on to start volunteering at his local lake aged 14. Following three years at Merrist Wood College, he became the Senior Countryside Instructor on a Youth Training Scheme, taking teams of young people out to learn practical conservation skills and inspiring them on their own paths to become ecologists/conservationists.
Since then, he has worked as a Countryside Ranger for a couple of local authorities in the south; as the Site Manager for the RSPB at Pagham Harbour and Medmerry reserves; and held several management roles for Sussex Wildlife Trust.
Following a four-month circumnavigation of the world in 2024, Steve is now a freelance consultant, contractor, surveyor, guest-speaker, wildlife artist and wood-worker. Although he doesn’t regard himself as an expert in any particular branch of ecology, his main interests are birds and fungi.
