Matt Phelps

Ecologist & Safari Guide

Matt is an avid birder, all-round naturalist and writer originally from Hampshire, now based in West Sussex. Often found outdoors, Matt’s fascination with the natural world began with childhood explorations of local woodlands and heathlands. Much of his wildlife knowledge is self-taught, although he also studied countryside management at agricultural college. Since then, he has spent the bulk of his working life nurturing landscapes for the benefit of wildlife, combined with carrying out ecological surveys and various other nature-related activities, such as leading guided walks and talks.

When not at Knepp, among other things he writes regular articles for various publications and reviews bird records both for eBird and as a member the Sussex Ornithological Society Records Committee.

‘I’m so delighted to be part of the team at Knepp. For as long as I’ve loved the natural world, I’ve very much enjoyed sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm with others. I think Knepp Wilding represents one of the most important and exciting nature restoration endeavours in the world right now. I first visited in 2016 and was amazed at the ambition and scale of the project. It’s such a privilege to now be able to enjoy and experience it first-hand and share all that excitement and wonder with visitors.’

Our 12+ Policy

Knepp Wildland Safaris and campsite are all about the quiet and patient observation of nature.

Some of the species we are likely to encounter are shy or can be frightened by loud noises or sudden movements. Our campsite with open-air fire-pits, wood-burning stoves and an on-site pond is unsuitable for small children.

For this reason, our safaris and campsite are suitable only for children of 12 and over.
