21st May: a culinary celebration of Knepp Tamworth pork

Josh Chalmers

Gardener

Josh can either be found grazing and surveying the Rewilded Walled Garden or helping establish the landscape surrounds and courtyard garden at the Knepp Wilding Kitchen & Shop.

He took the scenic route to gardening, via art direction in advertising. Whilst working on a project with the environment at its heart (and inadvertently getting nominated for Beazley Designs of the Year), Josh realised that creating adverts really wasn’t right for him.

In 2020 he discovered gardening, and was relieved to find that his aesthetic eye and problem-solving skills were not going to be wasted. He trained at Charleston, East Sussex, and studied Horticulture and Wildlife Design at Stanmer Park. Before arriving at Knepp, Josh was also a volunteer at Marchant’s Hardy Plants nursery.

My passion is in helping to reposition gardening as an essential part of reversing the catastrophic biodiversity loss we are witnessing in the UK today.  There is nowhere I’d rather do this than at Knepp.
