Charlie Harpur

HEAD GARDENER

Charlie joined the Knepp team as Head Gardener in early 2022 to oversee the rewilding of Knepp’s Walled Garden, as well as the development of the Market Garden and the landscape at the Wilding Kitchen.
Having trained as an architect, he worked for the landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith for several years. Charlie then gained practical experience in horticulture and ecology at gardens including Chelsea Physic Garden and Kew, where he completed the Kew Diploma in Horticulture, before returning to Tom’s team. He worked both in the design studio and on setting up The Serge Hill Project for Gardening, Creativity and Health.

When not gardening, Charlie can often be found running. He was the British 100km champion in 2019.

Gardens are part of the solution to reversing biodiversity loss, and I’m excited to be exploring their potential at Knepp. By applying the principles of rewilding to this unique context, it is fascinating to think of the ecological complexity that can be created in gardens – and even window-boxes – of all sizes.
