You will head out into the rewilding project with Knepp’s head ranger and woodman, Tom Burns, to visit some of Knepp’s remarkable oaks. You’ll follow the journey of an oak from an acorn in a jay’s beak through to an ancient giant. Learn about the importance of thorny scrub as the ideal nursery for young trees and the importance of natural regeneration for a tree’s genetic diversity and resilience. In Knepp’s wood pasture landscape you’ll find another meaning for the word ‘forest’ – a much more diverse and dynamic ecosystem, in tune with the forests of old.
Mid-way through the safari you’ll break for a refreshing drink and locally made brownies.
This is a walking safari that lasts approx 3 hours at a gentle pace with frequent stops. You’ll need a moderate level of fitness and be able to cope with walking on uneven ground.
PLEASE NOTE: Story of the Oak Safaris start in a different place to Knepp Wildland safaris. Do not go to the campsite/safari car park; please follow the directions to the Wilding Shop on your pre-visit email.

Knepp Wildland Safaris, our gardens and campsite are all about the quiet and patient observation of nature.
Some of the species we are likely to encounter are shy or can be frightened by loud noises or sudden movements. Our campsite with open-air fire-pits, wood-burning stoves and an on-site pond is unsuitable for small children.
For this reason, our safaris, garden visits, holiday cottages and campsite are suitable only for children of 12 and over.
