Inside the ‘Riverlution’: The Ascent of the Rights of Nature in the UK

Author Talk and supper with Monica Feria Tinta
6pm Thursday 15 October 2026

Can a planet have rights? Can it be defended in a court of law? How must we redefine the “right to life”?

In her book A Barrister for the Earth, Monica Feria-Tinta tackles these fundamental questions, championing an eco-centric approach to the protection of the natural world. For nearly two years, Monica advised on a pioneering Charter of Rights for the River Ouse in Sussex – a first for England, that sparked a nationwide “riverlution.” In this talk, she explores how moving past a human-centred perspective is radically transforming the legal defence of Britain’s natural world.

Monica is an award-winning barrister at the Bar of England & Wales, who has acted in landmark climate and ‘rights of nature’ cases, globally. Her book, A Barrister for the Earth was shortlisted for the Westminster Book Awards and it is being developed for a legal drama by a Sony-owned production company, Eleventh Hour.

Join host Isabella Tree to hear about Monica’s pioneering work, with a welcome glass of bubbly, plenty of time for audience Q&A, followed by a three-course dinner at the MICHELIN green starred Wilding Kitchen.
