The Guiding Principles of Knepp
Our Vision is for Knepp to be a leading example of rewilding and nature regeneration both at home and abroad, believing that restoring fully functional ecosystems is urgently needed for the future of people and the planet.
Our Purpose is to continue on the journey of process-led rewilding, seeking to encourage further dynamic natural processes by such means as key species reintroductions and varying the management of the large herbivores. We aim to inspire and promote rewilding through evidence–based studies rigorously conducted at Knepp, and through engagement with local communities, NGOs, policy-makers and educators. Rewilding provides the ethical context for all other activities on the Estate.  Â

A balance to be struck between our open, welcoming approach to all visitors, and ensuring there is space for nature to recover undisturbed.

A supportive, engaging approach that aims to give all employees a fulfilling and interesting role.
Properties for let – cottages and houses for living not holidaying in
In recognition of local and national housing needs, we do not let properties that are suitable for long-term and family living as holiday accommodation.
Energy – as sustainable as possible, an ongoing process
Our long-term goal to be entirely sustainable in energy across the estate, continuing to improve on energy efficiency and sourcing in all our properties, and with energy use at the heart of all decision-making.
Procurement – as sustainable as possible, an ongoing process
Using ethical judgement when buying anything, and creative intelligence to reduce the need to buy from new.
Waste – reduction first; and converting the rest into productivity
Cutting down on all unnecessary waste, particularly single-use plastics; making good use of compost; and developing ways of collecting and conserving water.
Education – targeting policymakers, funders, and a new generation of natural scientists and conservationists
Conducting talks and tours to explain rewilding to influencers, philanthropists, investors, special interest groups and academics; and running an on-site field study centre for sixth form and undergraduate science students through our charitable foundation.
