KNEPP SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY
Legal summary
The policy requires that you will not, while an employee of Knepp (ie the Knepp Estate, Knepp
Wilding Kitchen and Shop, or other businesses) nor after the termination date of employment,
disclose, publish or reveal to any unauthorised person any other incident, conversation or
information concerning any employee, agent or consultant of Knepp or any of its customers,
guests or visitors which comes to your knowledge during the continuance of your employment,
or any incident, conversation or information relating to your employment by Knepp unless duly
authorised in advance in writing by Knepp management.
This includes that you will not publish, procure, facilitate or encourage the public matter in any
book, newspaper, periodical or pamphlet or television broadcast, film or by way of any other
medium (including any social networking sites, blogs or the Internet generally) now known or
devised or by communication to any third party including a representative of the media without
first obtaining written consent from Knepp management.
Nothing in this shall preclude you from making a protected disclosure within the meaning of
section 43A of the Employment Rights Act 1996.
To help explain what this means in practical terms and closer detail, these are the guidelines by
which Knepp requires you to act:
Engaging with the media
To ensure accurate and consistent communication about Knepp and to protect Knepp’s
intellectual property, all media engagement should be coordinated via Knepp centrally.
- If colleagues are contacted by journalists, producers, or media researchers about Knepp, they should inform Knepp management (Issy, Charlie, Jason, Ned or Lia) and copy in the communications/marketing lead before conducting any interview or informal conversation.
- Colleagues can only speak on behalf of Knepp with the express permission of Knepp management and with the communications/marketing lead’s awareness.
- If contacted directly by a journalist, please politely refer the enquiry to the communications/marketing lead.
- Colleagues should not speak “off the record” to journalists. Assume that anything said may be published.
- Requests for images or footage of Knepp should be referred to Lia and the communications/marketing lead. If in doubt or in need of advice, contact the communications/marketing lead in the first instance.
Using social media
Colleagues are welcome to share experiences of Knepp on their personal social media channels but must do so responsibly.
- All content gathered and created (photos, videos, written pieces) during or owing to your role as an employee of Knepp are the intellectual property of Knepp. As such, if you take particularly unique, striking or significant photos or footage at Knepp, please let the communications/marketing lead know so Knepp can share these first (often in collaboration with you).
- Feel free to share and amplify Knepp’s posts. Ask the communications/marketing lead
for guidance if you are new to social media. - Ensure personal accounts make clear that you are not posting on behalf of Knepp. You may include a disclaimer, for example: “The views expressed are my own and do not reflect the views of Knepp.”
- Even with a disclaimer, avoid posts that could defame or disparage Knepp, or bring Knepp into disrepute. This includes:
o expressing views or sharing images or content that might reasonably be considered offensive (including those which are pornographic, proprietary, harassing, libellous, or that can create a hostile work environment)
o sharing confidential information about Knepp, its staff or visitors
o posting content that runs counter to Knepp’s values - Obtain appropriate permission before posting about individuals, organisations, or copyrighted materials, trademarks, or service marks.
- Images and footage shared online should clearly credit the photographer or filmmaker.Knepp-owned images should be used only with permission and credited to Knepp Wilding.
- If asked to remove content relating to Knepp, do so promptly.
- If you see negative, incorrect or otherwise concerning commentary about Knepp online, please notify Knepp management as well as the communications/marketing lead.
- Do not let your personal social media account affect your ability to perform your regular duties
Wildlife and sensitive site protection
- Please avoid sharing information, images, or videos that could disturb wildlife or reveal sensitive habitat locations (e.g. beaver areas, stork nests and other nesting spots, especially of rare species).
- Be aware that there are legal restrictions around photographing protected species. See government information here.
Visitor privacy
- Do not share identifiable images or personal information of visitors without theirconsent.
Engaging with other organisations
- If approached about a potential collaboration or partnership with a commercial company, refer the enquiry to Knepp management.
- Do not approach another organisation to suggest a partnership or collaboration without prior approval.
Engaging with political figures
- If approached by a politician, campaigner, or other political figure to speak on behalf of Knepp, please refer the request to Knepp management and copy in the communications/marketing
lead.
Authorship
- Writing articles, books and other written content based on your work at Knepp for the media, publishers or any other organisations may only be carried out with prior consent of Knepp management.
