Training for tree professionals with Jon Hartill, expert arborist from Sweden.

Join us on a two day course to look at trees in greater depth, with a focus on the biology and mechanics of mature and veteran trees. We will explore how we can use this information to better manage trees for their longevity and for the wildlife they support.

This course is aimed at professionals working with trees and will comprise both indoor and outdoor learning. We will cover a range of topics and questions, and debate will be encouraged.

23-24 May 2024 (please note that the date shows up as just 23 May at point of booking, but it is a 2 day course).

Day 1:

  • Introduction: Trees, what we can learn from the experts
  • Tree rings, wood anatomical features and the biomechanical outcomes
  • Optimisation, the effects of size, shape, and geometry on tree stability
  • Visual tree assessment
  • Fluid mechanics
  • Wind in trees and root anchorage

Day 2:

  • Fungi in trees
  • Material properties and modes of failure in plants
  • Reciprocity
  • The concept of self-referencing for tree safety evaluation

Jon comes from England, where he started as an arborist in 1988, he now lives and works in Sweden. He has over 30 years of experience including tree work, training, and consultation. Jon is trained in arboriculture and is an ISA certified arborist, ETW certified tree climber and QTRA certified tree risk analyst.  He calls on this extensive experience and knowledge to train other arborists in best practice.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided by the Knepp Wilding Kitchen, please let us know of any dietary requirements at the point of booking.

Knepp Wildland Safaris and campsite are all about the quiet and patient observation of nature.

Some of the species we are likely to encounter are shy or can be frightened by loud noises or sudden movements. Our campsite with open-air fire-pits, wood-burning stoves and an on-site pond is unsuitable for small children.

For this reason, our safaris, holiday cottages and campsite are suitable only for children of 12 and over.
