The Bothy – Summer Stays

The Bothy is hidden in an old oak woodland in the rewilded park surrounding Knepp Castle.

Stay three-nights mid-week (Monday to Thursday) during the Summer.

Originally a dairy for the three milk cows for the castle, the Bothy has been converted into a charming rustic cabin suitable for a single person or couple. The spacious main room features a four-poster bed at one end and comfortable sofa and armchair around a woodburning stove with a plentiful stock of sustainable, home-sourced wood at the other. Radiators supply additional heating.

Additional furnishings are reclaimed, antique and/or have their origins on the estate. The floor is made from cedarwood planked from 300-year-old trees that fell around the castle during the 1987 storm, and the bathroom (which also features a deluxe rain shower) has an enormous vintage bath salvaged from Knepp’s dower house, Floodgates.

While you’ll be close to nature, falling asleep to the hoots of owls and – in autumn – roaring stags, we’ve done our utmost to ensure you’re as cosy and comfortable as possible. The kingsize bed with luxury natural-fibre mattress is made up with four down pillows, Egyptian cotton bed linen and down duvet, topped with a beautiful quilt for additional warmth. Towels are provided and we can provide hypoallergenic bedding on request.

The well-equipped, country-style kitchen contains a Rangemaster 5 ring gas cooker, fridge/freezer and washing machine, with a Sheila maid from the ceiling for eco-drying.

The Bothy does not have a TV but there is good WiFi so you can stream away for cosy movie nights in, or simply curl up for a read from the Bothy’s bookshelves.

You are just a short stroll from Knepp’s extensive network of public footpaths through the rewilding project. A map of circular walking routes is provided, along with information on local shopping, pubs, restaurants and recommended activities for rainy days.

You’ll find complimentary organic tea, coffee, milk and sugar for your arrival so you can make yourself a cuppa, put your feet up and settle in.
